The Meher Free Dispensary was founded in 1970 on the principles of love and service exemplified by the life and work of Meher Baba. Dr. Goher Irani, who began the Dispensary, demonstrated in her own life and work a balance of love and practicality which serves as an example to the individuals working there today. She supervised the details of the Dispensary and trained the present staff until her death in 2004. The Dispensary is now administered through a non-profit foundation which oversees clinic operations and plans for the future.
The Meher Free Dispensary operated out of a single room until 1978, when patient demand necessitated the construction of a multi-room facility. During its three decades of operation, that facility grew to serve 300-400 patients per week. In 2006, to further meet the long-range medical needs of the region, the Meher Free Dispensary opened a new 7,350 square foot 18 room facility. Since opening the new building, the Dispensary has steadily increased the number of patients seen daily, adding about 300 new patients per month.
