Dr. Goher Irani

Dr Goher Dr. Goher Irani was born in Quetta (then India) in 1916, but moved to Ahmednagar (Western India) while still a child. She had a strong sense at an early age that she should become a doctor. This was not an easy path for a young woman at the time. However, despite roadblocks along the way, she persisted in her efforts and entered the medical world.

For most of her adult life, she served as Meher Baba's personal physician and her career was guided by him. Soon after Meher Baba's death, in 1969, Dr. Goher established a dispensary for the villagers and farmers living in the rural, poor area near her home. The original dispensary was operated out of a single room. In 1978 a new dispensary building was opened on the same property. There Dr. Goher continued and expanded her medical services for the next 28 years. The present facility, which opened in November 2006, was planned while Dr. Goher was still alive. One of her last acts was to attend the dedication of the site as construction was begun. Dr. Goher passed away on June 30, 2004.

Dr. Goher was very particular about the details of the operation of the Meher Free Dispensary. Nothing was wasted. Everything had a use. She was even more particular that an atmosphere of loving service prevail amongst all who were associated with the Dispensary — be they paid workers or volunteers. Over the years, many individuals from around the world were trained in this atmosphere of humble service, and many then carried this training into their lives in the medical profession.

Dr. Goher's spirit is embodied, in part, in the work of the Meher Free Dispensary. Her real work and example, however, is reflected in the hearts of the many patients she served and the staff and volunteers who were touched by her life.
